Ongoing Club Programs

Civic Beautification
The Civic Beautification Committee works locally to enhance the community. In
keeping with the objectives of the Centerport Garden Club, the committee
encourages civic beautification, community planting, and conserving the beauty of
the area.

Grist Mill
The perennial plantings at the Grist Mill located in Centerport are kept neat from May until frost.

Harborfields Library Circle
Projects include the designing, planting, and maintenance of the garden at the Harborfields Public Library Circle.

Centerport Memorial Park
Our donation of a Red Bud tree in observance of Patriots Day is located at the Centerport Memorial Park. The area around the tree is kept weed free.

Gardiner’s Farm
After a presentation/slide show from the Greenlawn/Harborfields Historical Society in 2005, the club was asked for their assistance at the Gardiners Farm. Members donated plants from their gardens, cleared, and then planted the garden around the farmhouse. On an ongoing basis, the club helps maintain the gardens and grape arbor (also donated by a member), as well as tending weekly to the beautiful geraniums.

Vanderbilt Museum Rose Garden
Restoration of the Vanderbilt Rose Garden, located just outside the Planetarium, is an ongoing project. Teams of members meet weekly during the planting season to maintain the garden. They also participate in the decorating of the mansion for the Christmas holidays, as well as making flower arrangements for special occasions.

Christmas Workshop   
A Christmas workshop is held each year. All members participate in making wreathes and arrangements for community nursing homes and shut-ins, community fire houses, the library, and memorial parks.

Conservation
Conservation at the Centerport Garden Club includes a range of activities. The Club participates in several community activities: the annual Littoral Society Beach Clean-up every fall, the Centerport Harbor Civic Association’s spring Clean-up along our harbor edges as well as trash removal at a local passive park. The Club has also worked at the local Nature Conservancy helping with native plants and invasive weeds. Additionally, the Conservation Chairperson speaks at monthly meetings on
such topics as recycling, plastic bags, water bottle use, invasive weeds, etc. She also keeps the club informed of changes in local ordinances such as Tree Preservation.

Garden Therapy
Dedicated members work as a garden therapy group each month with special needs grade school children in the Harborfields School District. Floral designs, horticulture, and other related projects geared to their age and ability are taught and worked on with the students. The Garden Therapy group also enters a project in our Flower Show.

Horticulture Committee
A group which provides an opportunity to exhibit, view and properly judge well grown, well groomed, correctly identified, fresh plant material.

Newsletter
The club puts out a monthly newsletter for all of its members. The newsletter informs everyone what is going on during the month, and also provides details of when & where our meeting will be held, and what is on the program each month. It also includes information about monthly horticultural garden tips.

Plant Sale
Each May a plant sale is held at the Harborfields Library as a club fundraiser. Members pot up specimens from their own gardens and donate them to be sold at the plant sale. The plant sale provides an opportunity for us to meet our community neighbors, help with horticultural advice, and recruit new members.

Street Garden Recognition Program
Approximately every two years the club holds a “Street Garden” recognition program where we seek out community members, both residential and business, who make an extra effort to plant and maintain a beautiful garden which the community can share in viewing from the street. The gardens are judged by members, and the garden owners are given a small reward for their efforts.

Student Scholarship
Each year, the CGC offers a $1,000.00 scholarship to a graduating senior from the Harborfields School District who will be pursuing a course of study in the areas of horticulture, landscape design, environmental science, forestry, botany, or other related areas.

Study Groups

Horticulture Study Group
A horticulture study group meets monthly to study various plant groups, visit gardens, attend lectures from gardening experts, propagate plants, and keep learning and sharing their knowledge.

Flower Arranging Study Group
A flower arranging study group also meets on a regular basis to learn about new designs, conditioning of plant materials, and general knowledge to assist them in preparing for flower shows.

Veterans Garden Therapy
A group of women go once a year to LI State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. They work with approximately 36 patients. The Club provides all supplies and guidance needed to help the veterans make individual floral arrangements for themselves. Some also make arrangements for their wives, nurses, and friends. It’s a mutually gratifying experience for both the veterans and the club members.
